The Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) has announced plans to revamp the prestigious Bordoloi Trophy from 2025 onwards, bringing fresh life to the 72-year-old football tournament. The GSA extended its gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his guidance and unwavering support in this initiative.
Once a hallmark event in Indian football, the Bordoloi Trophy has seen a decline in recent years. However, with the upcoming changes, the tournament is set to regain its former glory. The new format will involve more than 5,600 players from 284 clubs, who will compete in 608 matches.
GSA President Paresh Chandra Das praised Chief Minister Assam Dr.Himanta Biswa Sarma’s for his desire to maintain the “football tradition” in Assam and helped to reinvent the iconic Bordoloi Trophy,
GSA Secretary Devajit Saikia praised the Assam Chief Minister for his cooperation, noting that Dr. Sarma has been instrumental in understanding the scope of the proposal and providing his consent to support the tournament. “The Honourable Chief Minister reviewed our proposal and assured us of all possible assistance. His vision for sports is very clear, and we are fortunate to have his backing in our mission to revive the Bordoloi Trophy,” Saikia said.
In addition, Kausar Jamil Hilaly, Secretary of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, reiterated the government’s commitment to reviving one of the oldest football tournaments in eastern India and boosting the football scene in the state.
The revamped Bordoloi Trophy is set to become a landmark event for football in Assam, potentially transforming the sport’s landscape in the region.
