Assam Cabinet Approves Major Restructuring of Commissionerate of Taxes

The Assam Cabinet has approved a major restructuring of the Commissionerate of Taxes, Assam, aimed at strengthening the State’s tax administration and enhancing efficiency in revenue mobilisation and service delivery.

As part of the restructuring, the overall sanctioned strength of statutory officers will increase from 540 to 701, with the creation of 157 new statutory officer posts and 4 Information Technology Officer (ITO) posts.

The restructuring will also reorganise the Commissionerate’s field operations into 11 functional zones, from the existing 10 zones, including the creation of a new Kamrup Zone. Further, GST-aligned rank nomenclature will be adopted across different levels of the tax administration.

The Cabinet has also approved suitable amendments to the Assam Taxation Service Rules to introduce separate examinations through APSC for the post of Superintendent of State Taxes.

The measures are aimed at building a modern, efficient and technology oriented tax administration capable of responding to the requirements of Assam’s rapidly growing economy.
