Guwahati’s successful hosting of multiple matches in the Indian Premier League 2026 has not only reaffirmed the city’s growing stature in Indian cricket but also highlighted the collaborative effort behind the scenes that made it possible. What began as an ambitious expansion move by Manoj Badale has now evolved into a well-established cricketing chapter for the Northeast one that continues to draw attention even amid changing dynamics within the Rajasthan Royals setup.

While the on-field action delivered thrilling moments for fans, the smooth execution of the Guwahati leg owed much to institutional backing and administrative support. At the forefront was Ranjit Barthakur, whose role proved crucial in ensuring infrastructure readiness and operational efficiency at the ACA Stadium. His continued push to position Guwahati as a reliable host venue has been widely acknowledged within cricketing circles.

Equally significant was the support extended by Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose government played a key role in providing logistical and administrative assistance. From security arrangements to city-wide coordination, the state machinery ensured a seamless experience for teams, officials, and spectators alike further strengthening Assam’s reputation as a capable host for marquee sporting events.

Behind the scenes, Devajit Saikia also played an instrumental role in facilitating continued IPL matches in Guwahati. Working in tandem with Badale and the franchise management, his support at the Board of Control for Cricket in India level helped navigate scheduling, approvals, and broader coordination required to bring high-profile fixtures to the city.

Interestingly, this year’s developments have also sparked fresh conversations around venue preferences within the league. Reports suggest that major IPL teams expressed reservations about playing at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, citing limitations in modern facilities. In contrast, Guwahati’s infrastructure from upgraded dressing rooms and training facilities to hospitality standards has drawn positive feedback from teams and stakeholders.

The successful hosting of matches in Guwahati has, therefore, not only been about fan engagement but also about meeting evolving professional standards in franchise cricket. The city’s ability to deliver both on and off the field has quietly strengthened its case as a long-term IPL venue.

However, uncertainty still lingers. With the anticipated ownership transition within Rajasthan Royals after the conclusion of IPL 2026, there is growing speculation about whether Guwahati will continue to feature as a host city in future seasons. While no official decision has been announced, discussions within cricketing circles suggest that any move away from Guwahati may not be straightforward.

Given the infrastructural concerns surrounding Jaipur and the proven capabilities demonstrated in Guwahati, the latter remains a strong and, in many ways, indispensable option for the franchise. The balance between tradition and modern requirements could well shape future decisions, making this an issue to watch closely in the coming months.

For now, though, Guwahati stands tall after a successful IPL season buoyed by strong administration, passionate fans, and high-level support across the board. The city has once again shown that it is more than just an alternate venue; it is a serious contender in India’s top-tier cricketing landscape.
