CM Dr. Sarma reviews infrastructure development of Lachit Borphukan Police Academy
CM stresses modern, functional and quality infrastructure for Assam Police
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today reviewed the ongoing infrastructure development works at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, where he is currently visiting in connection with the conference of senior Superintendents of Police. He also reviewed the progress of projects for construction of residential quarters at police stations and battalions across the State, besides the development of Model Police Lines in four districts.
Prior to the review meeting, the Chief Minister took an overview of the functioning of the Smart Response Unit, a rapid response team of the Assam Police established to ensure swift and effective response to crisis situations.
Infrastructure development at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy is being undertaken in phases. The first phase, which included the construction of the academic building and the police museum, has already been completed, while work on the second phase is currently underway. With an estimated cost of over Rs. 200 crore, the second phase includes construction of barracks with a capacity to accommodate 1,500 personnel undergoing training, hostels for officers attending training programmes, and residential quarters for officers, trainers and other staff of the Academy. Planning for the third phase has also been initiated.
During the review, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma reiterated the need to develop the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy as a world-class police training institution, equipped with modern infrastructure and facilities conforming to the highest national standards.
He directed that the portion of the Academy campus adjoining the National Highway should be kept completely open so that the institution has a visible presence from the highway. He also stressed the need for the police museum to be developed in an aesthetically appealing and professionally curated manner, with the assistance of an experienced curator.
Speaking on the importance of providing high-quality training infrastructure and adequate accommodation for police personnel, the Chief Minister suggested that an additional barrack with a capacity to accommodate 1,000 personnel be constructed as part of the third phase.
Dr. Sarma further directed that the third phase should include, in addition to the remaining barracks, hostels and residential quarters, modern facilities such as an open-air stadium, swimming pool and horse-riding training centre. He called for a study of the training infrastructure and facilities available at the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong and other training establishments of the Indian Army, with a view to adopting suitable best practices at the Police Academy in Dergaon.
Reviewing the projects for construction of residential quarters at police stations and battalions across the State, as well as the development of Model Police Lines, Dr. Sarma advocated for the construction of residential accommodation in close proximity to police stations for Officers-in-Charge, Sub-Inspectors and constables. He directed that such quarters should be adequately spacious, scientifically planned and designed to provide a conducive living environment for police personnel and their families.
The review meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Ajay Tiwari, senior police officers, senior officers of the Public Works Department and representatives of the agencies engaged in the execution of the projects.
