Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on January 17 and 18, during which he will participate in major cultural and infrastructure-related programmes in Guwahati and Kaliabor.

On January 17, at around 6 p.m., the Prime Minister will attend “Bagurumba Dwhou 2026”, a traditional Bodo cultural programme at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. The event will celebrate the rich heritage of the Bodo community and is being described as a historic cultural gathering.

More than 10,000 artists from the Bodo community will perform the Bagurumba dance in a single, synchronised presentation. Artists representing 81 Legislative Assembly constituencies from 23 districts across Assam will take part in the event.

Bagurumba is one of the most prominent folk dances of the Bodo community and is deeply inspired by nature. The dance symbolises blooming flowers and reflects harmony between human life and the natural world. Traditionally performed by young Bodo women, with men accompanying them as musicians, the dance features gentle, flowing movements that imitate butterflies, birds, leaves and flowers. It holds deep cultural significance, representing peace, fertility, joy and collective harmony, and is closely associated with festivals such as Bwisagu, the Bodo New Year, and Domasi.

On January 18, at around 11 a.m., the Prime Minister will visit Kaliabor in Nagaon district, where he will perform the Bhoomi Pujan for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, worth over Rs 6,950 crore. He will also flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains.

The 86-km-long Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, which involves the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway-715, is an environmentally conscious infrastructure initiative. It will include a 35-km elevated wildlife corridor passing through Kaziranga National Park, a 21-km bypass section, and the widening of 30 km of the existing highway from two lanes to four.

The project will pass through Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts and is expected to significantly improve connectivity to Upper Assam, particularly Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. The elevated corridor will ensure uninterrupted movement of animals, reduce human-wildlife conflict, enhance road safety, cut travel time and lower accident rates. Bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat will also help decongest towns, improve urban mobility and enhance the quality of life for local residents.

During the programme, the Prime Minister will flag off the Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express and the Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) Amrit Bharat Express. These services are expected to strengthen rail connectivity between the Northeast and northern India, providing safer and more convenient travel options for passengers.
