The Government of Assam has welcomed the Election Commission of India’s decision to conduct a Special Revision of the electoral roll with January 1, 2026 as the qualifying date. Officials said the move will help ensure clean, updated and accurate voter lists for all eligible citizens across the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Assam will extend full cooperation to the Election Commission to complete the revision process in a transparent and time-bound manner. He added that the state government is committed to supporting all measures that strengthen the democratic process.
SIR stands for Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll.
It is a detailed and time-bound exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to thoroughly update and verify the voter list.
What happens during SIR?
- Door-to-door verification of voters
- Inclusion of new eligible voters
- Deletion of duplicate, shifted or deceased voters
- Correction of names, addresses, photos and other details
- Ensuring every eligible citizen is on the electoral roll
Why is it done?
To ensure the voter list is clean, accurate and error-free, especially ahead of major elections or when large-scale corrections are required.
