Cyclonic Storm Ditwah has moved towards the Tamil Coast with a speed ranging from 7 to 10 kmph. According to the Weather department, it is located 320 km southeast of Karaikal and 530 km south of Chennai. It is very likely to continue to move north-northwest across Srilanka to reach North Tamilnadu and South Andhra Coasts by early morning of 30th November.
Extremely heavy rains are expected in Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Mayiladuthurai and some places in the delta districts today. Some coastal districts are likely to receive heavy to moderate rainfall. Tomorrow the coastal areas extending from Nagapattinam to Kanchipuram will have heavy to extremely heavy rainfall according to the Weather Department. Rains are likely to continue till the 30th in northern Tamil Nadu and South Andhra.
Weather experts have drawn a similarity with another cyclone in 2006, which bypassed the Tamil Coast. Due to gusty winds, train services to Rameswaram have been stopped temporarily. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as gusty winds up to 85 kmph are likely.
