Uma Chetry’s ODI Debut Against Bangladesh In Women’s World Cup 2025

22

India faced Bangladesh in the final league encounter of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on October 26, 2025. Although the fixture held no bearing on the points table, it became a landmark moment for wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry, who earned her maiden ODI cap for the senior national team.

Chetry, 23, was drafted into the squad after Richa Ghosh sustained a finger injury during India’s 53-run win against New Zealand on October 23. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana presented the debut cap to the young cricketer in a brief on-field ceremony, held shortly before rain delayed proceedings.

First from Northeast India to Reach the Senior ODI Stage

Hailing from Bokakhat in Assam, where she was born on July 27, 2002, Chetry has become the first female cricketer from Northeast India to represent the senior national side in ODIs. Her journey has exemplified perseverance. With limited infrastructure in her early years, she once walked 16 kilometres daily to pursue her training ambitions, eventually rising through state and national pathways.

Chetry made her international debut in T20Is on July 7, 2024, against South Africa. The match was washed out before she could bat, although she has since featured in seven T20Is, scoring 37 runs at an average of 9.25, with three catches and one stumping to her name. She has represented Assam and India A in domestic and developmental circuits, and joined UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League in March 2024 as a replacement for Vrinda Dinesh.

Despite already sealing a semi-final berth, India aimed to conclude the league stage with a strong performance against the eliminated Bangladesh side. Rain, however, disrupted the toss and delayed the start, leaving conditions uncertain as fans awaited further updates from the umpires.
