Amid heavy floods caused by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, relentless rainfall led to the swelling of the Torsa River, submerging large parts of West Bengal and Bhutan.

Acting promptly on an emergency request from Bhutanese authorities on October 5, 2025, the Indian Army launched two helicopters from the Sevoke Road Aviation Base to carry out a critical rescue mission in the flood-affected Phuentsholing region.

Despite poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, Army Aviation pilots first conducted an aerial reconnaissance of the area before executing a skilful landing in difficult terrain. The stranded civilians were safely airlifted to secure locations, showcasing the Army’s professionalism and courage under pressure.

A senior Army officer stated, “The Indian Army stands ready at all times to assist civil authorities during emergencies. This operation demonstrates our unwavering humanitarian spirit and the strong bond of friendship shared between India and Bhutan.”

The successful operation underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, living up to its motto of Service Before Self while reinforcing bilateral cooperation and goodwill between the two neighbouring nations.
