11

Joonmoni Gogoi, wife of Ghanakanta, who is accused in the murder of five people, appeared at the Paltan Bazar Police Station and was questioned for nearly 10 hours, from 1 PM until midnight. Following the interrogation, she made several significant statements to the media regarding the incident.

According to Joonmoni Gogoi, Ghanakanta went to meet the Bharali family that day only because of their repeated requests and pressure. She claimed that Ghanakanta had initially wanted to discuss the matter over the phone, but the Bharali family repeatedly insisted that he meet them in person.

Explaining the dispute over the hotel business, Joonmoni said that due to poor business performance, Ghanakanta wanted to hand over the hotel to the Bharali family and recover the security deposit. She claimed that he had been making payments until July but could not continue afterwards because the business was not doing well. However, she denied allegations that no payments had been made at all.

Joonmoni further claimed that she and her husband came to know about alleged immoral activities taking place at the hotel only at a later stage. She maintained that Ghanakanta had always respected the Bharali family and had not gone to meet them that day with any intention of creating an unpleasant situation.

According to her account, several people allegedly pressured Ghanakanta on the day of the incident. She also claimed that he had told her he somehow managed to get out of the situation. Joonmoni stated that after the incident, Ghanakanta first called her and advised her and their daughter to remain cautious.

Meanwhile, Joonmoni revealed that when she left home, she was carrying hotel-related documents and the car keys. Police have now seized those documents and the vehicle keys. She also informed the media that investigators had confiscated several items, including the vehicle and mobile phones.

Speaking about the camera-fitted spectacles, Joonmoni said that Ghanakanta regularly wore them. She also alleged that the house owner was making false statements, claiming that the house had indeed been rented out.

While acknowledging Ghanakanta’s responsibility in connection with the deaths of five people, Joonmoni questioned why he had gone to the location and insisted that this aspect should also be thoroughly investigated.

She expressed hope that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would ensure a fair and impartial investigation so that the complete truth behind the incident could emerge.
