In a swift and well-planned operation, Delhi Police rescued a 13 yearold boy from the clutches of a kidnapper within just 3 hours by using a clever UPI transaction to track the accused. The police also arrested the alleged kidnapper in northeast Delhi.
According to police sources, a man identified as Akash had allegedly kidnapped the minor boy and demanded a ransom of 40,000 from his mother in exchange for his release.
The incident came to light on October 30, when a woman approached the Jyoti Nagar Police Station in Shahdara and reported that her son had gone out to purchase some items but had not returned home for a long time.
Shortly afterwards, she received a phone call from an unidentified person demanding 40,000 for her son’s safe release. Following the complaint, police registered a case and formed a special team to trace the missing boy and apprehend the accused.
During the investigation, the kidnapper contacted the woman again and insisted that the ransom be paid through UPI. He subsequently shared a QR code for the transaction. To trace the recipient and identify the accused, police transferred 5,000 through the bank account of a police personnel.
Technical surveillance led the investigating team to a cybercafe in Karawal Nagar. The cafe owner informed police that a man accompanied by a minor boy had visited the establishment and used his UPI QR code to receive 5,000 in exchange for a commission of 50.
Police subsequently examined the CCTV footage of the cybercafe, following which the woman identified the minor in the footage as her missing son.
To bring the accused back to the same location, police initiated another 5,000 transaction through the same QR code. The plan worked as expected.
Akash returned to the cybercafe with the boy to collect the money in cash. Police personnel, with the assistance of the cafe owner, apprehended him and safely rescued the minor.
During interrogation, Akash reportedly disclosed that he worked as a delivery assistant in Sadar Bazar. He knew the boy through one of his relatives. Police said the accused had lured the minor onto his scooter before making the ransom call to his mother.
Police recovered 5,000 in cash, the mobile phone allegedly used to make the ransom call and the scooter reportedly used in the kidnapping. The cybercafe owner had also received 50 as commission for facilitating the transaction.
According to police, Akash had no previous criminal record or known involvement in criminal activities. The rescued boy was subsequently reunited with his family.
The swift operation highlights how Delhi Police used a UPI transaction and technical surveillance to track down the alleged kidnapper and rescue the child within just three hours.
