IIT Guwahati to Introduce Diploma, BTech Courses in Semiconductor Technology Through Tata Electronics Partnership
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics Private Limited to strengthen semiconductor education, skill development and research in India.
The partnership aims to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the IIT Guwahati campus, focusing on semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP). The initiative is expected to develop industry-ready professionals and promote advanced research in semiconductor packaging technologies.
The collaboration will also focus on addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in India’s semiconductor industry through specialised academic programmes and industry-oriented training. It will create opportunities for students from engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions across Assam and the Northeast.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Rohit Sinha, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Guwahati, and Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Human Resources Officer of Tata Electronics, in the presence of IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal and other senior officials from both organisations.
Under the agreement, IIT Guwahati will lead the development and delivery of diploma-level training and B.Tech-level engineering programmes in semiconductor ATMP, incorporating practical, hands-on training into the curriculum.
The partnership will also facilitate faculty training, joint development of industry-relevant courses, student training opportunities at Tata Electronics and collaborative research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Speaking about the initiative, IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said the collaboration would strengthen the connection between academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and research.
He added that identifying educational institutions across Assam and developing semiconductor-focused curricula would expand access to specialised technical education and strengthen the region’s skilled workforce.
The partnership is expected to strengthen India’s semiconductor talent ecosystem while positioning Assam and the Northeast as emerging contributors to the country’s semiconductor education, research and workforce development landscape.
