New Rules for Air Ticket Pricing from January 1, 2027; Centre to Intervene if Airlines Charge Excessive Fares
Important news for air travellers! A new policy governing airline ticket pricing will come into effect across India from January 1, 2027. Under the Indian Aircraft Rules, 2026, airlines will be allowed to determine ticket prices based on passenger demand. However, the Central Government will retain the authority to intervene directly in the interest of the public, particularly in cases of excessive fares or extraordinary circumstances.
Under the new rules, the government will not impose any fixed upper limit on airfares. This means airlines will be free to determine ticket prices by considering factors such as passenger demand and operational costs. However, maintaining transparency in fare structures will be mandatory.
According to a government notification issued on Saturday, every airline will have to submit its complete fare structure and related details to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) within the prescribed guidelines and timelines. Airlines will also be required to publish detailed fare information on their respective official websites.
Particular emphasis has been placed on ensuring that passengers are not caught off guard by additional charges while booking tickets. Airlines must clearly disclose the base fare, applicable taxes, government fees, cancellation charges, refund conditions and all other additional costs at the time of booking.
Meanwhile, the government will maintain close oversight to prevent airlines from taking advantage of sudden increases in passenger demand on particular routes, especially during festivals, special occasions or emergency situations, to charge excessively high fares.
In the event of any unusual or emergency situation, the Central Government will have the authority to issue special directions regarding airfare pricing, whenever necessary.
The government notification further states that such directions, issued in the public interest, will remain effective only for a specified period.
Notably, while the new policy will provide airlines with greater flexibility in determining ticket prices, the government will retain its authority to protect passengers’ interests.
It remains to be seen how the new system, coming into effect on January 1, 2027, will impact air travellers across the country.
