The Delhi government has announced a comprehensive ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers in the national capital. The prohibition will remain in effect until January 1, 2025, as declared by Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Monday.

“The Kejriwal government has imposed a complete ban on the manufacturing, storing, sale, and usage of firecrackers to control the rise in pollution levels during the winter season,” Rai said. He added that online sales and delivery of firecrackers will also be prohibited during this period.

This announcement comes as part of a broader 21-point Winter Action Plan aimed at curbing air pollution in Delhi’s colder months. In a novel approach, the Environment Department plans to utilize drones for real-time air quality monitoring at pollution hotspots, marking a first for the city.

Minister Rai has directed all departments to submit detailed action plans and suggestions under the Winter Action Plan to the Environment Department by September 12. He emphasized that the government has intensified its preparations to address pollution concerns in the upcoming winter season.

Highlighting the government’s efforts, Rai said that under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, stringent measures have led to a reduction of about 30% in pollution levels over the past nine years.

In a bid to foster a collaborative approach, Rai has also reached out to the Delhi state unit presidents of Congress and BJP, seeking constructive suggestions for the Winter Action Plan.
