Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia vacated his official MLA residence in Guwahati on Thursday, marking an emotional end to his long legislative career.
Saikia, who had been an MLA for three consecutive terms, was seen leaving the residence with his packed belongings. He suffered a shock defeat in the Nazira constituency in the recently concluded Assam Legislative Assembly Elections.
Expressing his disappointment, Saikia found it difficult to accept the massive margin of defeat. He questioned, “How did I lose by such a huge margin? Was it due to welfare schemes, threats, EVM manipulation, or something else?”
He further stated, “I served as Leader of Opposition for 10 years, yet I continued to stay in the MLA hostel. Now I am leaving the house where I have lived for the last 15 years.”
The veteran Congress leader’s departure from the official residence has drawn attention as he grapples with his electoral loss in what was considered a relatively strong seat for him.
This development comes as newly elected MLAs prepare to take charge following the formation of the new government in Assam.
