National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Monday (August 24), where he will participate in Special Representatives (SR) talks on the India-China border issue with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. Both countries are scheduled to hold the 25th round of SR talks on Tuesday.
These talks come at a time when India and China are continuing to de-escalate tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and de-escalate the situation of military confrontation. Relations between the two countries were severely strained following the violent clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which subsequently led to the deployment of large numbers of troops and military equipment by India and China in eastern Ladakh.
In recent years, several rounds of talks have taken place between the two countries at the military and diplomatic levels. The objective of these talks has been to ensure the withdrawal of troops from the LAC, disengagement, and peace and stability in the border areas.
The Special Representatives mechanism is an important forum established to seek a political solution to the border dispute between India and China. The National Security Advisor from India and his counterpart from China hold talks under this mechanism. The objective is not only to reduce the current military tensions but also to find a political path to a comprehensive and long-term solution to the border dispute.
Issues related to the LAC situation, border peace, troop deployment, border management, and bilateral relations between the two countries are likely to figure prominently in the talks between Doval and Wang Yi.
India has consistently maintained that peace and stability on the border is a fundamental prerequisite for normalization of relations between the two countries. China has also insisted on resolving the border dispute through dialogue.
The significance of this meeting is further enhanced because both diplomatic dialogue and military-level talks between the two sides are crucial to advancing the process of improving relations between India and China.
Doval’s visit assumes significance because the Special Representatives’ Dialogue is not just a platform for immediate military management of the border dispute, but can also play a crucial role in finding a long-term political solution to the India-China border issue.
