Guwahati reconnected to Bangkok as Drukair relaunches key route

7

Drukair has resumed its Bangkok services via Guwahati, re-establishing an important air link between Bhutan, Northeast India and Southeast Asia. The airline has introduced twice-weekly flights on the Paro–Guwahati–Bangkok route, with operations beginning this week.

In addition to the Bangkok service, the airline will increase its frequency on the Singapore route, adding a third weekly flight from April 7. The expansion is aimed at improving connectivity and meeting rising passenger demand across the region.

The reinstated Bangkok route is expected to benefit travellers from Bhutan and Northeast India by providing improved access to one of Southeast Asia’s major travel hubs. The route has historically supported tourism, medical travel, education and business exchanges between the regions.

Aviation observers note that Guwahati’s growing role as a regional transit point has contributed to renewed interest in such routes. With better international connectivity, the city is increasingly being positioned as a gateway for outbound travel from the Northeast.

The enhanced Singapore service is also expected to offer more flexible travel options and smoother onward connections to destinations across Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. Singapore remains a key global aviation hub, making it a preferred transit point for international passengers.

Speaking on the development, Tandi Wangchuk said the move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to expand its network and improve international access. He added that the initiative aligns with regional connectivity goals and supports growing travel demand linked to developments such as Gelephu Mindfulness City in southern Bhutan.

Meanwhile, Jalpa H Vithalani said the resumption of Bangkok flights is expected to strengthen ties between Northeast India and Thailand by facilitating easier movement of people for tourism, education and trade.

Industry stakeholders believe the expanded services will further integrate Bhutan and Northeast India with key Southeast Asian destinations, while contributing to economic and cultural exchanges in the region.
