Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday attended the 22nd  Confluence of Hearing and Speech Impaired children for Skill Development organized by organizations such as Acharya Tulsi Mahashraman Research Foundation, Mahaveer Intercontinental and Anam Prem at Tulsi Grand in Dharapur locality of Guwahati. As many as 550 specially-abled children belonging to the deaf and hearing-impaired category from across the country were imparted skill-development training at the 4-day workshop aimed at encouraging them to tread in the path of entrepreneurship and self-employment.

Addressing the event, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma extended warm greetings to the organizers of the event for taking the initiative to train as many as 550 specially-abled children in skill development.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said the cases of hearing impairment being observed in a certain percentage of children in the country can be drastically reduced if such special cases are brought to notice on time and necessary treatment protocols followed. For this to happen, awareness needs to be created on a mission mode, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said. Referring to the utility of cochlear implants in treating hearing impairment, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma spoke about the treatment method being provided free of cost to affected children in Assam.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said the specially-abled (divyang) children are highly intelligent and are filled with confidence and bestowed with pleasant personalities. They need to be provided with a proper medium so that they can channelize their intellectual abilities for productive purposes, the Chief Minister said, adding that organizing workshops such as the one being held at Tulsi Grand would go a long way in enabling the divyang children to make best use of their talents.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma assured to look into the request by the organizers of the event for cooperation from the Government of Assam in setting up of a “divyang university” in the State.
