Newborn Death in GMCH NICU: Parents Record Statements at DME; Probe Continues

The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) is continuing its investigation into the shocking death of a newborn baby girl in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The tragic incident occurred on 17 August 2025. As part of the ongoing probe, the parents of the deceased infant recorded their statements at the DME office today.

Earlier, the state government had constituted a three-member inquiry committee headed by an Additional Chief Secretary. The committee submitted its detailed investigation report to the government.

Following the recommendations of the committee, five doctors were placed under suspension. The Nurse In-charge, Bhanu Priya Michong, was arrested and sent to judicial custody.

The bereaved family continues to demand justice even months after the incident, expressing deep anguish and anger over the loss of their daughter.

The case has sent shockwaves across Assam and raised serious concerns regarding the quality of neonatal care at the state’s premier medical institution. Further action is awaited based on the findings of the investigation.
