The janaza (funeral prayer) of five-year-old Sakib Alam, who died tragically inside his classroom after a piece of food got stuck in his throat, was held amid massive public outrage and demands for justice.

More than one thousand people attended the janaza and raised slogans demanding strict action against those responsible for the child’s death.

The heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday at Holy Flower Senior Secondary School in Katigorah. Sakib Alam, a KG-1 student, choked while eating his tiffin. According to allegations, the class teacher and her assistant failed to notice the child’s distress due to gross negligence.

Shocking CCTV footage from the classroom later revealed that the boy struggled on the floor for nearly 2–3 minutes, writhing in distress. However, the teacher and assistant, who were engaged in conversation, did not pay any attention. Even after another student informed them about the incident, they allegedly failed to respond promptly.

The child’s mother is reportedly undergoing medical treatment following the traumatic incident.

Local residents have strongly demanded an impartial investigation into the matter and have appealed to the District Commissioner to ensure justice. Many have expressed serious concern over the safety of young children in private schools, stating that the incident has exposed the callous attitude of certain teachers.

This tragic death has once again sparked debate about the lack of proper supervision and emergency preparedness in school classrooms, especially for young students.
