The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday closed 48 tourist destinations across the Valley in response to heightened security concerns following a deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Baisaran near Pahalgam. The attack, which left 26 people dead—including a local resident and a Nepali national—was reportedly a targeted strike on Hindu men.

Of the region’s 87 tourist locations, 48 have now been shut to visitors, while security has been significantly strengthened at the remaining 39 sites. Officials said the decision was made to prevent further incidents and reassure the public.

The attack has led to a sharp drop in tourist arrivals, with a noticeable decline in footfall at Srinagar airport. The killings have sparked widespread condemnation across the country, with many expressing outrage over the brutal assault.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible—along with their supporters and handlers—would face punishment “beyond their imagination.”

In a swift response, security forces demolished 10 homes belonging to active militants, including those of Adil Hussain Thoker and Asif Sheikh, both believed to be involved in the Pahalgam attack.

On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly unanimously passed a resolution denouncing the incident. The resolution described the attack as “heinous, barbaric, inhumane, and cowardly,” stating that such acts threaten the values of Kashmiriyat, the Indian Constitution, and national unity. The Assembly also expressed condolences and solidarity with the victims’ families.
