Elon Musk’s Starlink gets approval to operate internet satellites over India

15

In a major boost to India’s digital connectivity ambitions, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has officially authorized M/s Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited (SSCPL), New Delhi, to offer satellite communication services using the Starlink Gen1 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.

The authorization, which is valid for five years from the date of issuance or until the end of the operational life of the Gen1 constellation (whichever comes first), marks a significant step in bringing high-speed satellite internet to even the remotest corners of India.

Starlink Gen1 is a global constellation comprising 4,408 satellites orbiting Earth at altitudes between 540 and 570 kilometers.

The constellation is engineered to deliver a robust throughput of approximately 600 Gbps over India, promising to revolutionize internet access for underserved and rural communities, as well as urban users seeking reliable, high-speed connectivity.

The IN-SPACe authorisation is seen as a pivotal move in India’s ongoing efforts to liberalise its space sector and encourage private participation.
