CR7 Makes History: Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes First Player to Score in Six World Cups

11

Just a day after Argentina’s Lionel Messi claimed the title of the FIFA World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo secured his own monumental piece of tournament history. The legendary attacker has become the first football player ever to score in six different editions of the World Cup.

A Record-Breaking Performance Against Uzbekistan

The 41-year-old Portuguese icon wasted no time making his mark during his nation’s Group K clash against Uzbekistan.

  • The First Goal: In just the sixth minute of the match, Ronaldo anticipated a precise cross from João Cancelo at the near post, deftly directing it home to give Portugal an early lead. The strike marked his ninth career World Cup goal since his tournament debut in 2006.
  • The Record-Breaker: Later in the game, Ronaldo capitalized on a rapid counter-attack engineered by Bruno Fernandes. Latching onto a through ball that sliced open the Uzbek defense, he drilled a clinical shot into the far post for his second goal of the match.

The historic second goal was met with a thunderous rendition of his iconic “Siu!” celebration from the crowd. With this double, Ronaldo advanced to 11 career World Cup goals and 145 total international goals, officially surpassing Eusébio’s long-standing record of nine to become Portugal’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history.

Eyes on the Ultimate Prize

While Ronaldo’s total World Cup tally remains behind Messi’s tournament record of 18, “CR7” continues to cement an unrivaled legacy in global football. However, for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, individual records remain secondary to his ultimate international ambition: winning his first-ever World Cup trophy to join his 2016 UEFA European Championship medal.

“I’m very happy,” Ronaldo said post-match. “But for me, the most important thing is our work and the confidence we showed. The team performed really well and improved a lot. Obviously, speaking personally, records are always nice, but my goal is always to help the national team achieve its objectives.”

Portugal will look to build on this momentum in their final group stage match against Colombia on Saturday, 27 June, where Ronaldo will have the chance to extend his historic run even further.
