In a major operation against bird poaching, Batadrava Police rescued 13 migratory birds during a raid at the historic Koya kujia Beel in Assam’s Nagaon district on Friday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team launched an operation in the Dhaniyabheti area and recovered 13 migratory birds of different species, including waterhens, moorhens and ducks (locally known as Kam Sorai, Dauk Sorai and Sharali Hah).

Police also seized several electronic devices allegedly used for hunting and trapping birds. The rescued birds were subsequently handed over to the Nagaon Forest Department for necessary care and further action.

Confirming the operation, a police officer said the team acted on specific information about illegal bird hunting in the area.

With the arrival of winter, Assam’s wetlands, rivers, agricultural fields and water bodies become important stopover sites for several species of migratory birds. However, the seasonal arrival of these birds also raises concerns over illegal hunting and poaching.

The police have urged local residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to bird hunting to the authorities.

Nature lovers and environmentalists in the area have welcomed the police operation, calling for continued vigilance and stronger action to protect migratory birds during the winter season.
