Assam launches Orunodoi 3.0, over 37 Lakh women to receive financial assistance
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday formally launched Orunodoi 3.0, the latest phase of the state’s flagship women-centric welfare scheme, announcing that more than 37 lakh women across Assam will receive financial assistance under the programme.
Launching the scheme at a state-level event in Guwahati, the Chief Minister described Orunodoi 3.0 as a major step towards strengthening the economic security of women and ensuring that government welfare benefits reach eligible households in a transparent and efficient manner.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sarma said the upgraded version of the scheme has been designed to simplify the process of benefit transfer while eliminating irregularities. He announced that Aadhaar-based verification has now been made mandatory for beneficiaries to ensure secure, seamless and hassle-free Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into their bank accounts. The move, he said, would enhance transparency and prevent duplication or ineligible claims.
Orunodoi, launched by the Assam Government in 2020, has emerged as one of the state’s largest social welfare initiatives aimed at empowering women from economically vulnerable families. Under the scheme, financial assistance is transferred directly to the bank accounts of women, enabling them to meet essential household expenses such as food, medicines, education and other daily needs. The scheme has gradually expanded over the years, both in terms of beneficiary coverage and financial assistance.
According to the government, Orunodoi 3.0 significantly widens the scheme’s reach, covering more than 37 lakh women across Assam. The latest phase also incorporates stricter eligibility norms and updated beneficiary verification to ensure that assistance reaches genuine recipients. Officials said Aadhaar authentication, along with linkage to eligible beneficiary records, will strengthen accountability and improve service delivery.
The Chief Minister reiterated that women remain at the centre of the state’s welfare agenda and said the government is committed to providing sustained financial support to economically weaker households. He expressed confidence that Orunodoi 3.0 would further enhance the financial independence of women while improving the overall quality of life of beneficiary families.
Since its inception, Orunodoi has evolved into one of Assam’s flagship Direct Benefit Transfer programmes. The government has progressively increased both the number of beneficiaries and the quantum of financial assistance under successive phases of the scheme, making it one of the largest women-focused welfare initiatives in the state.
With the launch of Orunodoi 3.0, the Assam Government expects the expanded programme to provide greater financial stability to millions of women while reinforcing transparency, digital governance and efficient delivery of welfare benefits through Aadhaar-enabled Direct Benefit Transfers.
