In a major step towards strengthening public healthcare, the Government of Assam has announced that it has ensured 100% availability of medicines under the Essential Drug List (EDL) across all health facilities in the state.

The initiative is part of the Free Drugs Service Initiative, launched by the Government of India under the National Health Mission (NHM) in 2015, which aims to provide essential medicines free of cost to patients visiting public health facilities. Assam adopted the scheme through the Department of Health & Family Welfare in collaboration with Assam Medical Services Corporation Limited (AMSCL).

According to officials, the state spent ₹378.67 crore on free drug procurement in FY 2024-25, and an enhanced allocation of ₹445.73 crore has been earmarked for FY 2025-26.

The program ensures a robust system covering procurement, warehousing, IT-enabled supply chain management, quality assurance, awareness drives, and grievance redressal. Citizens can register complaints or feedback through WhatsApp number 9864541430, which will be displayed in all health institutions.

Medicines are now available at every tier of healthcare, from medical colleges and district hospitals to sub-health centers. For instance, medical colleges have access to 352 essential medicines and 69 specialty drugs, while sub-health centers are equipped with 30 essential medicines.

Officials highlighted that the initiative has improved healthcare outcomes, increased accessibility for vulnerable populations, and reduced out-of-pocket expenses for patients, while also ensuring transparency and accountability in drug distribution.

The Assam government reaffirmed its commitment to continue expanding quality healthcare and providing free medicines to every citizen across the state.
