No Petrol in Assam for 24 Hours from November 12; Greater Guwahati Petroleum Dealers’ Association Announces Shutdown

12

The North East India Petroleum Dealers’ Association (Greater Guwahati Unit) has proposed a 24-hour shutdown of petroleum outlets across Assam from 6 AM on November 12 to 6 AM on November 13, 2026, protesting alleged arbitrary actions and non-performance by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

In a press release issued on October 28, the association alleged that OMCs had been threatening dealers with suspension of supplies of essential petroleum products, including Motor Spirit (MS) and High-Speed Diesel (HSD), based on presumptive allegations.

The dealers’ body claimed that such threats were being issued without following due procedures or providing dealers an opportunity to defend themselves.

Questioning the authority of OMCs to take such action, the association maintained that oil marketing companies are not law enforcement agencies and must function within the framework of existing petroleum laws and statutory regulations.

Citing the Petroleum Products (Maintenance of Production, Storage and Supply) Order, 1999, under the Essential Commodities Act, the association asserted that petroleum dealers have clearly defined legal rights and responsibilities.

It further alleged that OMCs had overstepped their authority by resorting to arbitrary measures and disregarding established statutory procedures.

The association has called for immediate intervention to resolve the grievances of petroleum dealers, stressing that the petroleum trade involves essential commodities crucial to everyday life.

Through the proposed 24-hour shutdown, the dealers intend to press OMCs to address their concerns and ensure fair treatment of petroleum dealers.

However, the association’s statement describes the shutdown as a proposed protest. It does not confirm whether the closure has received final approval or whether all petroleum outlets across Assam will participate.
