Actor Imran Khan Gets Interim Relief in ‘Leave India’ Notice Case

9

Actor Imran Khan has received interim relief in his challenge to a ‘Leave India’ notice issued against him. The government has assured the Bombay High Court that no action will be taken against him until November 2, the next date of hearing.

Khan, a US citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, had challenged a notice issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), directing him to leave India by October 28.

The notice was reportedly issued after Khan allegedly participated in a protest on October 10, organised in solidarity with a demonstration by the Cockroach Janta Party in Delhi. The protest demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of unilateral functioning and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that Khan violated the rules by participating in the protest despite being a US citizen. The complaint was subsequently forwarded to the FRRO, which issued a deportation notice under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.

Section 7 of the Act empowers the Central Government to issue orders and directions regulating, restricting or prohibiting the entry, departure, presence or movement of foreign nationals in India.

The matter is scheduled to be heard next on November 2. Until then, the government has assured the court that no action will be taken against the actor.
