World Gibbon Day is being celebrated in Barekuri, a cluster of 21 villages in Tinsukia district, widely known for its Hoolock Gibbon population. The two-day event is being organised jointly by the Barekuri Environment and Eco-Tourism Development Committee and the Hoolock Gibbon Conservation Society, Tinsukia.
As part of the celebrations, an awareness cycling competition was organised for women to promote the conservation of Hoolock Gibbons and raise awareness about environmental protection.
The cycling competition was flagged off by Sanjay Kishan, MLA of the Margherita constituency.
The main objectives of the event are to promote Barekuri as a tourism destination, encourage greener and more sustainable practices in the area, and create greater public awareness about the conservation of Hoolock Gibbons.
Barekuri is particularly known for the unique coexistence between local residents and Hoolock Gibbons. The village has gained recognition for its conservation efforts and growing eco-tourism potential.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the special relationship between the people of Barekuri and Hoolock Gibbons during his Mann Ki Baat programme.
The World Gibbon Day celebrations aim to strengthen conservation efforts, protect the region’s rich biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism, while encouraging greater community participation in wildlife protection.
