From Driving an Uber in Delhi to Asian Games Glory: Salman Khan’s Remarkable Journey
There was a time when Salman Khan drove an Uber through the streets of Delhi to support his family. Today, he has scripted a remarkable chapter in Indian sporting history by winning a bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Games.
Representing India in the men’s double sculls event, Salman Khan teamed up with Satanam Singh to secure the bronze medal. The Indian pair clocked 6:13.25 to finish third in the event.
The medal is particularly significant as it is India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the men’s double sculls event.
But behind Salman’s achievement lies a story of hardship, responsibility, determination and an unfulfilled dream that refused to die.
A Childhood Marked by Responsibility
Born in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, Salman is the eldest among six siblings.
His father, Mohammed Qasim Khan, worked in Tauru, Haryana, building truck bodies. When Salman was just 18 years old, tragedy struck—the family lost its sole earning member when his father died of dengue.
With the responsibility of supporting his family falling on his shoulders, Salman had to put his dream of joining the Indian Army on hold.
He moved to Delhi and began driving an Uber cab, working hard to earn money and support his younger brothers and sisters.
He Never Gave Up on His Army Dream
Despite the difficult circumstances, Salman continued to dream of joining the Army.
A friend noticed his height and physical build and encouraged him to try for military recruitment. Salman handed over his Uber to another driver and spent around four months preparing for the Army recruitment process.
His hard work eventually paid off.
After successfully clearing the recruitment rally, medical examination and written test, Salman joined the Bombay Engineer Group in Pune on September 25, 2018.
From Soldier to Rower
It was after joining the Army that Salman’s journey into rowing began.
Coaches Satyawan, Satish Shirat and Prabhat Mishra noticed his physical potential and encouraged him to take up rowing.
Initially, Salman had little interest in the sport. But the encouragement from his coaches convinced him to step into the boat and give rowing a chance.
His first major breakthrough came at the Inter-Centre Regatta, where he won a silver medal. He went on to win medals in subsequent Battalion and Inter-Centre competitions.
In 2021, after meeting the required ergometer standards, Salman was selected for the Army Rowing Node at CME, Pune.
From Delhi Roads to the Asian Games Podium
Years of discipline, training and perseverance eventually brought Salman to the biggest sporting stage of his career.
At the 2026 Asian Games, the former Uber driver from Amethi stood on the podium wearing an Indian jersey, winning a historic bronze medal in the men’s double sculls.
From driving a cab on Delhi’s roads to rowing for India on the Asian stage, Salman Khan’s journey is a powerful reminder of how determination, opportunity and relentless hard work can transform a life.
