9 Killed, 20 Rescued as Bus Catches Fire on Yamuna Expressway
Nine passengers were killed after a bus travelling from Delhi to Mahoba caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The bus, bearing registration number BR32PA8647, caught fire near the 33-km milestone in the Jewar police station area. More than 20 passengers were safely rescued by police and fire personnel.
Officials said nine people were found dead inside the bus, apparently due to burns or suffocation. A preliminary probe suggested that a spark or blast in the AC system may have caused the engine lubricant oil to catch fire, following which the blaze spread rapidly.
The driver and conductor have been taken into custody, and a case has been registered. Efforts are underway to identify the deceased.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced ₹2 lakh compensation each for the families of the deceased and directed officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
