Trump Welcomes Xi Jinping to Washington for High-Stakes US-China Talks

US President Donald Trump has welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington, DC, for a three-day visit focused on trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and broader US-China relations.

Xi arrived at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, where Trump personally greeted him. The arrival ceremony featured a military band, a cannon salute and a flyover by a B-1 bomber. The two leaders, accompanied by their wives, shook hands and posed for photographs.

The visit comes as Washington and Beijing have agreed to extend an 11-month trade truce that had been due to expire on November 10. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the agreement, known as the “Busan Agreement”, will now remain in place until January 10, giving both sides additional time to negotiate a broader trade deal.

During their talks, Trump and Xi are expected to discuss tariffs, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and other major geopolitical issues. Taiwan is likely to remain a particularly sensitive issue, with Beijing continuing to claim the self-governing island as part of China, while Washington maintains ties with Taipei.

Xi is also scheduled to attend a state dinner involving senior US technology industry leaders, participate in a military ceremony at the White House and visit the National Archives.

Following his arrival, Xi said China and the United States should work as partners rather than rivals. China’s state-run Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying that China’s national rejuvenation and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” vision could complement each other and benefit the world.

The visit comes at a significant moment in US-China relations, with both countries seeking to ease trade tensions while negotiating over technology, security and strategic issues.
