Guwahati’s Artificial Flooding: Massive Drain Cleaning Drive Underway After Chief Secretary’s Directive

15

Following severe artificial flooding that has plagued the city after recent rains, the Assam administration has swung into action.

On the instructions of Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, a massive drain and nullah cleaning drive has been launched across Guwahati. During the cleaning operations, huge quantities of plastic bottles, polythene bags, and other non-biodegradable waste are being removed from the drains.

Officials have expressed shock at the sheer volume of plastic waste, which clearly indicates a lack of civic sense among a section of the citizens. This plastic waste has been a major contributing factor to the artificial flooding, as it blocks the free flow of water in the city’s drainage system.

The Chief Secretary has taken serious note of the situation and directed all concerned departments to intensify the cleaning operations and ensure proper disposal of waste. He has also warned that strict action will be taken against those found dumping garbage into drains.

The ongoing drive aims to clear all major nullahs and drains before the next spell of heavy rainfall to prevent further flooding in the city.
