The highly-anticipated five-match Test series between India and England kicks off on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds, marking the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket as Shubman Gill takes charge as captain.
This landmark series, now rebranded as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy (formerly the Pataudi Trophy), also marks India’s first challenge in the new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
Gill, aged 25 years and 258 days, becomes the youngest Indian Test captain of the 21st century, stepping into the role following the retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, Gill will aim to lead India to their first Test series win in England since 2007.
India last won a Test series on English soil 18 years ago and will be looking to end that drought against a formidable England side led by all-rounder Ben Stokes.
This will be Gill’s first full-fledged Test assignment as skipper, having previously led India to a 4-1 T20I series victory in Zimbabwe in 2024. His leadership in domestic red-ball cricket includes five first-class matches, including one in the Ranji Trophy. He also impressed in the IPL 2025 by taking Gujarat Titans to the playoffs.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri, speaking on The ICC Review, praised Gill’s leadership in the IPL, saying, “He was composed, calm, and showed tactical maturity.”
India’s 19-man Test squad features a mix of youth and experience. Alongside Gill, players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), KL Rahul, and Karun Nair are expected to anchor the batting unit. The bowling responsibilities will rest heavily on pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, supported by spinner Ravindra Jadeja.
Notably, four other Gujarat Titans players — Sai Sudharsan, Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Prasidh — also find a place in the squad.
England’s squad for the opening Test includes big names such as Joe Root, Ollie Pope (vice-captain), Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and Harry Brook. Their bowling unit features Chris Woakes, Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse, and Shoaib Bashir.
India vs England: Historic Rivalry
The two sides share a long-standing rivalry, having faced off in 136 Test matches since 1932. England lead with 51 wins, while India have won 35. Fifty matches have ended in draws.
India won their last encounter in the format with a convincing 4-1 series win at home in 2024. Their last tour to England in 2021-22 ended in a 2-2 draw due to a COVID-19-postponed fifth Test.
India’s only Test series victories in England came in 1971, 1986, and 2007 — and the team will be looking to add another historic win under Gill’s leadership.
