Ullu, ALTT, Mojflix Among 25 Apps Banned In India For IT Law Violations
Adult content streaming platforms – Alt Balaji, Desi Flix, Ullu app, and more have been banned in India for showing unlawful content in the country. In a move to tackle the ever-increasing distribution of inappropriate content, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Government of India, has published a notification for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to disable public access to 25 websites that peddle adult content.
The government also stressed on the point that the intermediaries are responsible for the removal of disabling access to unlawful content under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Information Technology Rules 2021.
Additionally, the government cited Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which says that intermediaries lose their exemption from liability if they fail to expeditiously remove or disable access to content that is being used to commit unlawful acts. All in all, the crux of MIB’s action is that all the intermediaries that fail to accept and act on the ban will be held responsible and punished as well for the distribution of the content.
