Star Cement becomes first to commence freight movement on newly inaugurated Guwahati–Sairang railway line
Star Cement has become the first company to commence goods traffic on the newly inaugurated Guwahati–Sairang railway line in Mizoram, marking a major milestone in the history of connectivity and commerce in the Northeast. The inaugural rake was loaded and flagged off from the company’s dedicated railway siding in Guwahati on Sunday , a day after Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji dedicated this engineering marvel to the nation.
The 51.38-km broad-gauge line, connecting Bairabi to Sairang near Aizawl, has been hailed as a transformational project that will integrate Mizoram more closely with the national railway grid. It is expected to significantly cut transportation time, reduce logistics costs, and open new avenues for trade and industry in the hill state and the entire region.

Star Cement expressed its gratitude to the Prime Minister for his vision of connectivity-led development and stated that the project will act as a catalyst for accelerating industrial and economic activities. The company also extended heartfelt congratulations to Northeast Frontier Railway for executing the project in extremely challenging terrain and to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his continuous commitment to strengthening infrastructure in the Northeast.
Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Purohit, Chief Operating Officer of Star Cement, said, “It is a matter of great pride for all of us at Star Cement to be the first to move freight on this historic route. This connectivity is a game-changer for Mizoram and the entire Northeast, and we are honoured to be a part of this transformative journey. Star Cement has always been committed to strengthening the foundations of growth in the region, and this new milestone reinforces our resolve to stand with the Northeast in its progress story.”
Star Cement, the largest cement manufacturer in Northeast India, has long been at the forefront of building the region’s infrastructure. With plants, operations and a strong distribution network spread across Eastern Region, the company has established itself as a trusted brand deeply rooted in the socio-economic fabric of the region. The company reiterated that it is not only building cement structures but also contributing to building trust, prosperity, and a stronger future for the Northeast.
Industry observers note that the start of commercial freight operations on the Guwahati–Sairang line will provide Mizoram with direct access to the national market, reduce dependence on road transport through hilly terrain, and create opportunities for both industry and agriculture. For Star Cement, being the first mover on this historic route further strengthens its leadership position and reflects its commitment to being a catalyst in the growth journey of the Northeast.
