The Assam government has sanctioned ₹4.55 crore for the smooth conduct of the upcoming Ambubachi Mela, which is set to take place from June 22 to 26 at the revered Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass made the announcement on Tuesday, assuring that preparations are already in motion to provide a hassle-free experience for both devotees and tourists.

A high-level review meeting was held earlier in the day involving 24 departments, including top officials like the Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner, Director of Tourism, and senior APDCL representatives. The meeting focused on coordinating efforts across departments to ensure seamless event management.

Dass informed that another key meeting will be held on June 9 at the DC office and the Kamakhya Temple premises to inspect the ongoing groundwork. Special facilities are also being planned for differently-abled individuals and those unable to ascend the temple hill.

“Like every year, we are ensuring that alternative routes remain open and accessible,” Dass said. However, he noted that roads vulnerable to landslides might be closed to vehicular traffic in case of heavy rainfall, though pedestrian access will still be allowed.

On the topic of COVID-19 precautions, the Minister stated that no specific guidelines have been issued by the government as yet. “Without official protocols, we cannot implement any health measures,” he explained. He also urged visitors to avoid bringing footwear, recommending the use of socks instead. Carpeted walkways and water arrangements will be provided to ensure comfort and hygiene.

Appealing for public cooperation, Dass said, “We request all visitors to maintain the sanctity of the temple and assist in smooth proceedings.” He also revealed that the Ambubachi Mela is being rebranded as the “Ambubachi Mahayog” to reflect its spiritual depth. Supporting this, senior temple priests explained that the event is more than a fair—it is a sacred time of heightened spiritual energy and austerity driven by planetary movements.

The 2024 edition of the event saw close to 7 lakh devotees, including international pilgrims. With a similar or greater turnout expected this year, the government is leaving no stone unturned to make the event safe, spiritual, and well-organized.
