Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday and thanked him for reducing tariffs on Indian products to 18%, calling the move a step that will strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
During the call, the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation and trade relations. They emphasised that closer collaboration between the world’s two largest democracies can create opportunities in trade, investment and technology that benefit their citizens.
PM Modi described the tariff reduction as a positive development that will further boost economic engagement and expand market access for Indian goods in the United States.
PM Modi and Trump also exchanged views on global developments and stressed the importance of peace and stability worldwide. The Prime Minister expressed India’s support for efforts that promote global peace and constructive international engagement.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote that it was “wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today.” He expressed his delight that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18% and extended “big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement.”
He added that “when two large economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.”
The Prime Minister further noted that “President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity” and affirmed that India “fully supports his efforts for peace.”
Concluding his post, PM Modi said he looks forward to “working closely with him to take our partnership to unprecedented heights.”
India and the United States continue to expand cooperation across trade, defence, technology and clean energy. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to advancing a comprehensive global strategic partnership.
