Amid escalating tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Saturday to express solidarity with families devastated by recent cross-border shelling.
The visit comes in the wake of tragic civilian casualties, including the deaths of 12-year-old twins, Zoya and Zain, in Pakistani shelling — a stark reminder of the human toll of the enduring conflict.
Gandhi flew into Jammu earlier in the day before traveling to Poonch, where he met the grieving parents of the children. His visit, Congress leaders said, was meant to show the party’s support for the victims and draw national attention to the plight of those living along the volatile border.
During an emotional interaction, Gandhi sat with bereaved families and offered heartfelt condolences. “We are with you in this hour of grief,” he told them. “No one should have to suffer like this.”
Later, Gandhi stopped at a local school, where he addressed students affected by the conflict. He encouraged them to remain focused on their education and futures, despite the uncertainty around them.
“Things will get better,” he assured the children. “Respond to this with strength — by studying hard, playing hard, and building friendships. That’s how you overcome fear.”
His visit drew quiet appreciation from residents, many of whom feel their suffering often goes unnoticed at the national level. The situation along the LoC remains tense, with intermittent shelling reported in recent days.
