Medical precaution, not Misconduct: RR responds to dugout controversy

25

The recent controversy surrounding Rajasthan Royals’ dugout during their IPL clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru has taken a more nuanced turn, with emerging details pointing towards a genuine medical concern rather than any deliberate breach of protocol.

Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder has come under scrutiny after being spotted using a mobile phone in the dugout an act that falls under restricted activities as per the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) guidelines. However, sources close to the development have indicated that the situation may not be as straightforward as it initially appeared.

According to those familiar with the matter, Bhinder’s actions were driven by precautionary medical needs. The Royals manager reportedly has a serious medical history, having suffered from collapsed lungs in the past. He had spent nearly a month hospitalized, including time in intensive care, making his condition a matter of ongoing concern.

Given this background, Bhinder was carrying the phone as a safety measure to remain reachable in case of any emergency. While league protocols allow limited communication in designated areas such as the dressing room, the dugout remains a restricted zone. Still, insiders suggest that no suspicious activity such as making or receiving calls was observed, with Bhinder reportedly only checking his device.

The situation gained attention after visuals showed RR player Vaibhav Suryavanshi glancing at the manager’s phone during the match, leading to speculation and eventually prompting a formal notice from the ACSU. Bhinder has been asked to provide an explanation within 48 hours.

Importantly, voices within cricketing circles have urged authorities to take Bhinder’s health condition into account before drawing conclusions. With mobility challenges also reported he is advised to avoid excessive walking or climbing stairs accessing the dressing room frequently may not have been a practical option during the match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Despite the off-field attention, Rajasthan Royals delivered a strong performance on the field, securing a convincing victory by six wickets. The chase was anchored by impactful innings from key players, reflecting the team’s focus and composure amid the unfolding situation.
As the investigation progresses, Rajasthan Royals remain hopeful that the authorities will consider the full context, particularly the medical circumstances, before arriving at any conclusion. The franchise’s stance underscores a broader message while maintaining the integrity of the game is paramount, player and staff well-being must also remain a priority.
