Union Home Minister Amit Shah today launched development projects worth 1,715 crore rupees, including the second Legislative Assembly complex, in Dibrugarh, Assam.

Addressing a public meeting in Dibrugarh, Mr Shah said the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement will boost Assam tea exports to European countries. He said the Centre has taken several steps to make Assam flood-free and urged voters to support the BJP in the next Assembly elections for development, peace, security, industrial growth and a flood-free Assam.

Accusing the previous Congress governments of neglecting the state, Mr Shah said the Congress used infiltration as a tool for vote-bank politics. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Centre has brought major infrastructure projects for Assam’s development. The Home Minister said that earlier, Assam was known for violence and disturbances, but under the BJP government, the state is now identified with peace and development.

Calling it a historic day for the people of the state, especially Upper Assam, Mr Shah said the second complex of the Assam Legislative Assembly coming up in Dibrugarh will strengthen administrative infrastructure.

The Home Minister unveiled the projects in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries. He laid the foundation stone for the 284-crore-rupee second Legislative Assembly complex and MLA hostel, part of the government’s efforts to develop Dibrugarh as the second administrative hub of the state. The project will include a three-storey Assembly building, a nine-storey MLA hostel, an 800-seat auditorium, and barracks for security personnel.

The Home Minister also inaugurated the first phase of a modern multi-disciplinary sports complex worth 238 crore rupees and laid the foundation stone for its second phase, estimated at 209 crore rupees. The first phase includes an indoor stadium, swimming pool, football field, main gallery, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, and hostels. The second phase will feature additional seating for 30,000 people, a central playground and an athletics track.

The Home Minister further laid the foundation stone for a 292-crore-rupee Wildlife Health and Research Centre for the treatment of wild animals, enhanced laboratory facilities and training units. These facilities will help improve coordination among forest officials, veterinarians and researchers.

He also launched a 692-crore-rupee project for the restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund. The project aims to restore 15 scientifically selected wetlands across nine districts to reduce urban flood risks, enhance water retention capacity and strengthen flood management in the Brahmaputra river basin.

After Dibrugarh, Mr Shah will travel to the neighbouring Dhemaji district to attend the Takam Mising Porin Kebang Youth Festival as the chief guest, marking his participation in a major cultural event of the Mising community. He will also interact with BJP functionaries there.

Later in the day, the Union Home Minister is scheduled to travel to Guwahati to hold discussions with party members at the state BJP headquarters. He will depart for West Bengal this evening after completing his engagements in Assam.
