Guwahati, North Lakhimpur Shine in Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, Earn “Promising Swachh Sheher of Assam” Title
Guwahati and North Lakhimpur have emerged as standout performers in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024–25, earning the title of “Promising Swachh Sheher of Assam.” The honours were presented during a ceremony held on Thursday at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, attended by Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the achievement on social media, declaring Guwahati as the cleanest capital city in the Northeast. This recognition follows the city’s attainment of the Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus status and a 1-Star Garbage Free City (GFC) rating.
“This is a reflection of Assam’s consistent efforts in improving sanitation and public hygiene,” Sarma said, crediting the people of Guwahati and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) for their collaborative efforts. “The city continues to lead with purpose and progress,” he added.
Echoing the Chief Minister’s sentiments, Mayor Mrigen Sarania said the award was the outcome of “organised efforts, increased public awareness, and active citizen participation.” He described the honour as a motivation to build a “transparent, green, and inclusive Guwahati.”
Guwahati has made an impressive leap in the national cleanliness rankings within the 3–10 lakh population category, improving from a lowly 402nd position out of 448 cities last year to 44th among 95 this year — moving to the middle tier. The city also joins Assam’s other AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) cities — Silchar, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh — in achieving a 1-Star GFC status for the first time.
North Lakhimpur also made remarkable strides, climbing to 155th out of 820 cities in the 50,000 to 3 lakh population category.
In a significant statewide achievement, six cities in Assam have now earned ODF++ certification — a notable rise from zero in the previous year. Both Nagaon and Silchar demonstrated marked improvements in their cleanliness rankings.
With multiple cities achieving key sanitation milestones, Assam is steadily moving closer to its vision of sustainable urban cleanliness and better public health infrastructure.
