With an objective to evaluate school education in the state and grade the schools accordingly so as to formulate specific strategy to achieve visible and measurable positive change in School Education System in the State, Govt of Assam celebrated Gunotsav, 2023 in three phases across the State from January 18-Feb 18, 2023. The four core areas viz. Scholastic (learning outcomes of children), Co-scholastic, Infrastructure and community participation are evaluated in Gunotsav exercise.
FACTS GUNOTSAV 2023:
- In Gunotsav 2023, children from Class-I to IX of Government/Provincialised, Tea Garden Management Schools, Tea Garden Model Schools, AdarshaVidyalayas, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) and Residential Schools are covered.
- All 31 districts are covered in three phases of Gunotsav conducted during the period of January/2023 to February/2023.
- A total of 44,531 schools and 41, 35, 163 Students (96.69%) are covered in the exercise.
- A total of18,097 External Evaluators including Hon’ble Minister, Ministers, Hon’ble MLAs, Chief Secretary to the GOA, senior IAS, IPS and IFS officers, class I & II officers of the state are engaged in the exercise.

SOME MAJOR IMPROVEMENT IN GUNOTSAV 2023:
- No. of A+ Schools increase to 28.64% from 11.52%. The increase % is 17.12
- No. of A+ students increase to 38.16% from 23.79%. The increase % is 14.37
- No. of total A+ and A grade schools increase to 74.83% from 52.22%. The increase % is 22.61
- No. of C grade schools decrease to 4.75% from 11.14%
- No. of D grade schools decrease to 1.85% from 5.09%.
- No. of C grade students decrease to 6.37% from 12.58%
- No. of D grade students decrease to 6.39% from 16.78%.
- 3233 schools obtained A+ in both Gunotsav 2022 and 2023.
- A total of 8380 A , B, C & D grade schools of Gunotsav 2022 upgraded to A+ in Gunotsav2023.

- Increase attendance of students to 96.69% from 91.72%. For grading of school, number of absente students were also considered in Gunotsav 2023.
IMPACT: Gunotsav has been found to have great impact on the school education scenario in the state. Gunotsav develops ownership of Community and Guardians towards the schools. Gunotsav results in involvement and initiative of community support is found more, which is already visible in success of Vidyanjali 2.0. In VIDYANJALI Programme, community has contributed 74392 Ceiling Fans to the Schools in the state. Further, 16244 Assets/Materials provided by Volunteers to the Schools. 46534 Volunteers registered under VIDYANJALI out of which service rendered to schools by 1004 Volunteers. Some other examples of community contribution to the schools are:
- Setting up of dining hall with furniture
- Installation of punching machine
- Construction of temporary classroom/building and addl. academic support by involving local youth etc.
Considering the importance of Gunotsav exercise, State Govt. has already issued notification on the following:
- 10% weightage of marks in Annual Examination to be considered from Gunotsav
- Incorporation of schedule of Gunotsav in Academic Calendar.
