Former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) General Secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah was released from Dibrugarh Central Jail on May 27, 2025, after the Gauhati High Court granted him bail in connection with a recent altercation at a petrol depot in Duliajan.
Baruah had been arrested by Duliajan Police on May 19 following a scuffle at the BN Petrol Depot. Two cases were registered against him at the Duliajan Police Station. He was granted bail by the Dibrugarh Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in one case on the day of his arrest. However, he remained in judicial custody until the Gauhati High Court granted him bail in the second case on May 26.
Upon his release, Baruah addressed reporters, stating, “I was arrested and 11 sections imposed on me for a post I wrote on Facebook. At the time I was handcuffed by police, Section 307 was not added.” He expressed gratitude to those who supported him during his detention.
The incident and subsequent arrest have sparked political reactions and debates across Assam, with some viewing the actions against Baruah as targeted. The case continues to draw attention as it unfolds.
