Flute Maestro Dipak Sarma Passes Away in Chennai

Renowned flutist Dipak Sarma, celebrated for the magical melodies he weaved through his flute, passed away on Sunday morning at around 6:15 AM in a Chennai hospital.

Sarma, who had been critically ill for the past few months, was initially undergoing treatment at a hospital in Guwahati before being shifted to Chennai for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of doctors, the revered musician could not recover.

Born in Panigaon village of Nalbari district, Sarma dedicated his life to music and earned immense respect and admiration for his soulful renditions that transcended generations. His artistry on the flute brought Assam’s rich musical heritage to the national stage.

In the final phase of his life, Sarma reportedly faced severe financial difficulties. Recognizing his contributions to Assamese culture, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had extended financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to support his treatment in October 2025.

The passing of Dipak Sarma marks the end of an era in Assamese classical music. Musicians, admirers, and cultural organizations across the state have expressed deep grief over the loss of the maestro, whose flute will forever echo in the hearts of music lovers.
