Flag of Assam Cricket Association to be flown half-mast in condolence of Rana Goswami death

Romen Dutta, President, Assam Cricket Association and Devajit Saikia, Secretary, Assam Cricket Association along with other members of the Apex Council, Assam Cricket Association deeply mourn the demise of Shri Rana Goswami, former Honorary Secretary of Assam Cricket Association, who passed away on May 16, 2021at 11 PM at the Apollo Hospital, Guwahati due to COVID-19 complications. A resident of Uzan Bazar, Guwahati, he was 77 years old, and leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.

Elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly, Chaygaon LAC, Assam in 2001, Late Rana Goswami had a long and illustrious association with Assam Cricket Association. He was the Honarary Secretary of the Assam Cricket Association from 1986-1989 and 1989-1992, its Vice President from 1992-95, and its Assistant Secretary from 1969-74 and 1974-77. Earlier, he had also served as the Joint Secretary of Assam Cricket Association from 1979-86, besides being a Governing Body Member from 1995-97. It was during his tenure as the Honorary Secretary of Assam Cricket Association that the Nehru Stadium, Guwahati hosted two ODIs – India Vs Sri Lanka on January 11, 1987, and India Vs West Indies on December 23, 1987.

A renowned and popular Sports Organiser, Late Rana Goswami wore many hats, and had a fruitful and long association with Guwahati Sports Association too. He was its Cricket Secretary from 1969-74, Assistant Secretary from 1974-81, General Secretary from 1981-1990 and President from 1990-94, 1996-98, 2004-2006 and 2012-2014.

A noted social activist, Late Rana Goswami had the distinction of being the Manager of the Indian Cricket Team in the 1995 Sharjah Tour, with Md. Azharuddin as its Captain and Bishan Singh Bedi as Coach, besides serving as the Vice-President of BCCI. He was also honoured with the Nurul Amin Sports Organiser Award by the Veteran Cricket Association, Assam in 2018. Moreover, as a mark of respect, the flag of Assam Cricket Association will be flown at half-mast for a week starting from today
