FIFA Honours Trump With Inaugural Peace Award

7

In a surprising fusion of global politics and world football, former U.S. President Donald Trump received the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize during the 2026 World Cup draw event on Saturday. The prize, unveiled last month, aims to honour individuals whose actions have significantly contributed to peace.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award, commending Trump for what he described as efforts to reduce conflict in several regions. Trump, visibly pleased, called the honour “a truly special moment,” and credited his diplomatic role in international peace initiatives.

During his remarks, he once again claimed involvement in facilitating a India–Pakistan ceasefire earlier this year. While India has consistently dismissed this assertion, Pakistan has credited Washington for helping negotiate the truce following Operation Sindoor, launched after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The recognition has sparked mixed reactions across the football world. Critics argue FIFA risks entangling the sport in political agendas, while supporters believe peacebuilding deserves acknowledgment — regardless of who leads it.

The 2026 World Cup, hosted jointly by USA, Mexico, and Canada, is set to begin on June 11, with Mexico facing Canada in the opening match.
