The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced another protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar today, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
Entry and exit gates at 45 Delhi Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk and Kashmere Gate, were closed on Saturday amid heightened security arrangements.
The fresh protest comes a day after around 3,000 people were detained across Delhi as police acted against the CJP’s call for a demonstration demanding Kumar’s resignation. Those detained included four former chief ministers: AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, Trinamool Congress founder Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar.
Most of the detainees were released by Saturday night. However, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, remained in custody.
Police have not granted permission for today’s protest. Authorities have taken several precautionary measures to maintain law and order in the national capital. Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka are expected to be produced before a court today.
