The 3400 MW plant to boost state’s power sector: CM

Aligning with the State government’s vision of meeting its power demand and achieving self-reliance in power generation,, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the proposed site for a thermal power plant at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in Bilasipara Co-District of Dhubri district.

Chief Minister Dr. Sarma inspected the site, which spans 3,300 bighas, 2 kathas and 15 lechas and assessed its viability as a potential location for the state’s upcoming power generation project.

During the visit, he reviewed various aspects of the site and interacted with some of the residents settled in the area. He assured them of giving rehabilitation grants as per the provision of the government.

It may be noted that with Assam’s energy demand projected to rise significantly reaching an estimated 5,000 MW by 2030 and 7,000 MW by 2035, the state government is actively working to transform Assam into a regional hub for thermal power generation. In line with this objective, the State Cabinet, on May 5, 2025, approved the Assam Thermal Power Generation Project Promotion Policy 2025, aimed at attracting large-scale investments in the sector. A 3400 MW thermal power plant will be established at the proposed site, and a tender for the project will be floated shortly.

The Chief Minister stated that once the plant becomes operational, it is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth. He assured that those legally residing on the proposed site will be adequately compensated and rehabilitated. He also sought cooperation from the people to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota also accompanied the Chief Minister during his visit to the site.
