Assam launches leopard census

To assess the population of leopards in both forest and non-forest regions, a leopard counting census has begun in Assam. The plan has been initiated in leopard-crowded regions of Amingaon by the North Kamrup Forest Division. The exercise has been conducted using the camera-trapping approach through 50 cameras installed in Changsari, AIIMS, Sila Reserve Forest, etc. surrounding Amingaon.

  1. The census area has been divided into grids of 2 x 2 mts and one camera would be installed in each grid.
  2. A basic sign survey is underway where on the basis of past record and present information, leopard bearing area is marked. A carcass of cow eaten by leopard near the Sila RF was found.
  3. A test camera trap is installed at one of the leopard prone area.
